Introduction to Crisis/Hostage Negotiation for First Responders
A practical introductory course of instruction for first responders, patrol supervisors, emergency dispatchers, CIT personnel, correctional staff, police chaplains, mental health professionals working in support of law enforcement activities, school resource officers and emergency medical personnel.
This course will provide students with an overview of crisis/negotiation as it relates to the taking of hostages, barricaded subjects, those persons who are actively suicidal or experiencing a mental health crisis as well as those engaged in suicide-by-cop behavior.
The presentation will focus on basic communication and de-escalation techniques, methods of influencing behavior, basic negotiation strategy and techniques to stabilize the scene.Students will participate in practical exercises to reinforce techniques addressed during lecture.
