Seminars in Law Enforcement

Defensive Driving and Pursuit Strategies

One of the most difficult tasks for law enforcement officers is to manage their driving, especially in emergency and pursuit situations. Every year in the U.S., several hundred people are killed and many more injured in the course of pursuits or other emergency motor vehicle operations. Victims from these incidents range from civilians to police officers, and the result causes a significant amount of emotional tension and distress. As a result, these types of incidents produce a very negative public view of law enforcement officials. This course will focus on defensive driving and pursuit strategies. This course does NOT have any physical driving element.

Topics to be covered:

  • Legal cases and points of emphasis
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Driving attitude
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Day vs. night time driving techniques
  • Pursuit strategies
  • Policy considerations
